Recognizing the Symptoms of a Panic Attack

Life is stressful, and at some time everyone feels a bit of anxiety. This is perfectly understandable. However, different people deal with their stress in different ways, and the degree of stress varies in each individual. In some cases, people only have to deal with the challenges of minor anxiety, while others suffer from its most extreme form: a panic attack.

A panic attack is widely considered one of the most alarming psychological states one can find themselves in. This is due to the fact that a panic attack is intense that its symptoms can mimic those of serious physical conditions and problems. Sometimes people mistake the onset of a panic attack with that of a heart attack, which can obviously cause a serious amount of fear and worry.

Even worse, though, is the possibility that the strain of a panic attack can cause legitimate damage to the heart. Being frequently afflicted with panic attacks might actually cause someone to develop heart problems over time, which is why it's so essential to find a way to diminish the occurrence of a panic attack.

Some people might not even be aware that they're suffering from panic attacks or panic attack related issues. This is because they don't know what the symptoms of a panic attack are. In order to assist people who want to be able to recognize a panic attack, here is a quick overview of the most common symptoms:

Several of the panic attack symptoms will seem to affect the afflicted's head, such as a pronounced dizziness. Vertigo and lightheadnesses are also amongst these types of symptoms.

These symptoms can be accompanied by a strange, dreamlike sensation that is soon followed by disorienting perceptual distortions. This description doesn't do justice to the actual experience, which is intensely disturbing. Since most people don't even know they're having a panic attack, their confusion can lead to even greater panic, which can have a profoundly negative psychological impact.

There are, of course, also several more tangible physical problems that develop. Some of the most common to be experienced are nausea and an upset stomach, due to the immense stress of suffering from a panic attack. This stomach distress can vary from mild to quite severe, and for some people it has been known to linger for hours. This is naturally quite an uncomfortable situation to be in, particularly when experiencing a state of high anxiety.

There are also physical symptoms that develop during a panic attack that can mimic a heart attack, which is usually quite terrifying to the person suffering from them. These problems include breathing difficulties and chest pains.

Reacting with fear to these symptoms is not an overreaction, because such symptoms are absolutely identical to suffering a heart attack. Not only that, but in some cases, the fear of experiencing a heart attack might possibly lead to an actual heart attack occurring.

Other physical problems can also manifest due to the psychological components of suffering a panic attack. For instance, an extreme panic attack may cause the onset of debilitating sensations of helplessness and terror.

This sensation is often accompanied by a feeling that the walls are closing in and an intense desire to escape. Unfortunately, since this particular symptom exists as a state of mind, there isn't any escape to be found. This is especially the case when the person in question isn't aware that a panic attack is what's causing the trouble.

Recognizing the symptoms of a panic attack is extremely important, but no less so than seeking help to manage the problem of anxiety induced panic attacks. Fortuantely there are several excellent books that can help you, and with the right book you'll be able to overcome this difficulty yourself.
